Don't have a gift bag for your gift? You can make one in under 10 min.

Scraps are seriously easy to come by here. I have more than I know what to do with. So I now make these on a daily basis to accompany the dresses I ship out or sell at craft fairs. The best part is they match the dress. I swear sometimes people buy something just to get a free gift bag to match :)

Supplies:

  • Fabric scraps from 2 different fabrics. Size depends on how big you need or want the bag. One only needs to be a strip about 8 inches long to tie.
  • Pinking shears
  • Scissors or rotary cutter(plus cutting mat)
  • ruler
  • gift tag or card (I use a business card)
  • hole punch

Measure twice cut once!

You can make your gift bag any size you want or whatever the size of scrap will let you. Mine here is measuring in at 20"x15" (10"x15" when folded in half). I make all different sizes this is just what is being done at the time. (My most standard size is 8" x 12" when complete) You can either fold your scrap in half and cut out accordingly or you can use 2 separate scraps and cut them the same size. I would stick to the same color for both sides but it is not necessary.

Good things come in pairs.

After cutting out your pieces you should have 2 fabric scraps of the same size and shape.

Pinking shears make a great decorative zigzag!

Use your pinking shears to cut the top of your bag to get a decorative zigzag. You can also hem or serge the top if you prefer. I personally like a zigzag. Make sure to do this for both sides and just the top is necessary.

I love my serger for many reasons.

Serge the 3 sides that you did not use the pinking shears for. This will create a nice pocket. If you don't have a serger you can use a basic straight stitch in the same manner.

If you don't have time to press you don't have time to sew.

Nothing is worse than a seam that wasn't pressed. Drives me nuts. If you don't have time to iron then you don't have time to sew. Its as simple as that. To get a nice looking gift bag I highly recommend pressing your bag flat. Can you spot my daughter Chloe in this picture?

No tape necessary

Punch a hole in your gift tag or card. Then thread your approximately 8" fabric strip through it. You can also use lace for a more decorative touch.

Stuff It!!!!!

Stuff your bag and tie your tag. Be sure to use a double knot to keep it in place. Now that you know how to make one make a few different sizes to keep on hand .Easy and professional in under 10 minutes.
